Call of Duty: Black Ops II is an upcoming first-person shooter video game, developed by Treyarch and published by Activision (Square Enix for Japan), to be released on November 13, 2012 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Microsoft Windows and on November 18, 2012 in USA and November 30, 2012 for Europe for Wii U. Black Ops II is the ninth game in the Call of Duty franchise of video games and a sequel to the 2010 game Call of Duty: Black Ops.
Black Ops II is the first game in the Call of Duty franchise to feature future warfare technology. It also presents branching story lines driven by player choice for the first time in the franchise's history. A corresponding game, Call of Duty: Black Ops – Declassified, will be released simultaneously on the PlayStation Vita.
Characters and Setting
The single-player campaign will feature two connected storylines, one set in the 1970s through 1980s and the other in 2025. The protagonist of Black Ops, Alex Mason returns as the protagonist in the Cold War section, where he will be fighting in proxy wars for the United States in the Cold War. Known locations for this section of the game include multiple sites inCentral America, Afghanistan during the Soviet invasion and Angola. This section of the game will also see the rise to infamy of the game's primary antagonist, Raul Menendez, a Nicaraguan narco-terrorist and the leader of "Cordis Die", a populist movement celebrated as the champions of victims of economic inequality. Mason's friend and colleague Frank Woods will also return, and narrate the story into the 2025 section of the game.
The 2025 section of the game features Alex Mason's son David as a protagonist. When a cyberattack cripples the Chinese Stock Exchange, China bans the export of rare earth elements, which in turn leads to a new Cold War between China and the United States. In this era, war is defined by robotics, cyberwarfare, unmanned vehicles and other futuristic technology.Taking advantage of this stand-off, Menendez attempts to bring the two powers to a full-blown war by inciting conflicts between the two. Known locations for this section of the game include Los Angeles, Singapore and Socotra, Yemen.
It has been hinted at that the side-plot of Viktor Reznov and his relationship with Alex Mason, which began in Black Ops, will be continued in Black Ops II.
Strike Force missions
Black Ops II will be the first Call of Duty video game to feature branching storylines, in which the player's choice affects both the current mission and in turn, the overall course of the story. Known as "Strike Force missions", these branching storylines will appear during the 2025 storyline and will feature permanent death. The success or failure of these missions can have ramifications for the wider campaign storyline. Choosing one of the missions locks out the others unless the player begins a fresh campaign.
Strike Force missions allow the player to control a number of different war assets, such as unmanned aerial vehicles, jet fighters and robots. If the player dies in a Strike Force mission, the campaign continues recording that loss, as opposed to letting the player load a previously saved checkpoint. The player's progress in the Strike Force missions may go on to change even the plans of the story's antagonist, Raul Menendez.By the end of the game, the player may have changed the results of the new Cold War, and the player will be shown what could have gone differently.
Zombies
Treyarch has confirmed that the Zombies mode will return for Black Ops II with its own campaign. Its predecessors were Call of Duty: World at War and Call of Duty: Black Ops. This is the third time for the Zombies mode to appear in a Call of Duty game, and the first time to have its own campaign along with the main story. Treyarch has also confirmed that Zombies will implement the multiplayer engine, allowing for a deeper community experience along with new game modes. It has also been confirmed that the Zombies mode will support 8 player co-op, unlike Call of Duty: World at War and Call of Duty: Black Ops, which only supported 4 player online co-op. Treyarch announced in August 2012 that Nuketown would be remade as a zombie map for those buying Hardened or Care Package Edition of Black Ops 2. On September 26, 2012, the Zombies reveal trailer was released as long as three new game modes comfirmed: Trazit is a game mode that is a combination of multiple maps in one game and the way two travel around it is to ride on a bus, Survival is the original mode from Call of Duty: World at War and Call of Duty: Black Ops where you survive to the longest round possible, and finally the mode Grief which is 4 players vs 4 players vs zombies. Although a Zombies campaign is comfirmed it is still unknown if Campaign is the Tranzit mode or if Campaign and Tranzit are completely different modes.
Harper is a character scheduled to appear in Call of Duty: Black Ops II. He is seen throughout the Black Ops II reveal trailer. He wields an M8A1. The name "Harper" is seen on his tactical vest. There is also a MAC-V SOG Emblem on his tactical vest.

Biography
Early life and military career
Woods was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He served in the US Marine Corps, during which he had much combat experience fighting in the Korean War. This gained him a reputation that led the CIA to recruit him for their Special Activities Division.
Bay of Pigs Invasio
- "Movement inside. Get in position. This is it... Ready to make history?"
- — Woods to Mason as they prepare to breach the bedroom
Woods is first seen in a Cuban bar with Mason and Bowman talking to Carlos in "Operation 40". Woods talks to Carlos about the location of Castro. Suddenly the police arrive, and when a Tropas Officer questions Mason, Woods stabs his hand to the table, smashes a bottle across his face, and then executes him. The squad flees to the streets, where the police are waiting for them. The squad fights their way to a car where they escape. We next see Woods at Castro's compound as he, Bowman, and Mason zipline into it. While Carlos and the rebels make the distraction in the airfield, Woods leads the raid into the compound. At some point, Bowman splits from the group and continues the search for Castro along the rooftops. Woods and Mason fight their way to Castro's bedroom, where Mason executes Castro with an ASP and either Woods or Mason kill his mistress. Regrouping with Bowman, Woods leads an escape to Carlos's C-130 where Mason jumps off and sacrifices himself for the escape of his squad. Later leading to his capture by Dragovich and Kravchenko, it is here revealed that the Castro they assassinated was a double, and the real Fidel Castro then turns Mason over to the Soviets, leading to Mason's 2 year imprisonment and then escape from Vorkuta.
Operation Flashpoint
- "No, no, no, somethin's wrong. There's way too much activity."
- — Woods
Woods later leads his team to Baikonur, U.S.S.R. on a mission to disrupt the Soviet Space Program at the Missile Launch Facility, and also to retrieve the captured Weaver. Woods and Mason kill two Soviets idling and disguise themselves as the enemy. Woods is somewhat fluent in Russian, as 2 more Soviet guards talk to him in their language and he answers back. After being exposed and fighting back, Mason and Woods zip-line and smash through a window. They kill a few Soviets and finally save Weaver. They go on to the Auxiliary Control bunker, with hopes to abort the launch. They fight their way to the missile and Mason detonates the room with the scientists in it, killing them, but failing to stop the missile. However, Mason uses a guided missile to destroy it. As they can't stay in the open, they move to the tunnels, with plans of still killing the Ascension group. As the mission comes to an end, Kravchenko escapes and there is no sign of Dragovich. It is assumed that he perished whilst inside his Limousine..
Capture, Escape, and Presumed Death
- "FUUUUUUUCK!"
- — Woods playing Russian roulette
In the mission "The Defector", Woods led the team to Hue City to recover a Soviet defector along with a dossier that would unravel Dragovich's master plan. While they managed to recover the dossier, extraction became a fight for their lives amid a massive assault by the NVA on Hue City.
Following on the intel disclosed by the dossier, Woods led the SOG team to Laos to uncover Soviet presence there, specifically those concerning Project Nova headed by Kravchenko, under orders from Dragovich. But it was at Laos, during the mission "Crash Site", Woods and the team found the shot-down Soviet cargo plane that carried Nova 6, but were subsequently captured by Dragovich and Kravchenko's men after a firefight.
During "Payback", Woods and Mason used the chance when they were forced to play Russian Roulette by the Viet Cong to stage their escape. They then proceed to take a Hind from Soviet Forces, and destroy several supply stops for North Vietnamese forces along the way to Kravchenko's compound. In the final part of the mission when Woods and Mason are attempting to kill Kravchenko in his office, Mason was brutally beaten when Woods, sneaking up behind Kravchenko, stabs him in the back. At his last breath, Kravchenko pulls a string attached to the pins of the grenade belt strapped to his body. Thinking quickly, Woods tackles Kravchenko out of the window, apparently sacrificing himself to save Mason as the grenades explode. Woods is presumed dead by everyone, including Mason and later by Hudson and Weaver during their interrogation of him.
Aftermath
- "Mr. Mason-- Woods is alive and remains the sole remaining American guest at the Hanoi Hilton. Thought you should know."
- — "X" to Mason about Woods' whereabouts
In a message from a mysterious informant codenamed "X" to Mason, Woods is reported as being the only prisoner at the Hanoi Hilton, and whilst it is known that he survived, it is unclear as to whether or not this is the truth; it is possible that this is a trap to lure Mason, Hudson, and Weaver there in order to kill them.
Retirement
Although having aged significantly to the age of 95, it is confirmed in the reveal trailer for Call of Duty: Black Ops II that Woods had survived the previous events of Call of Duty: Black Ops and his supposed death with Kravchenko but due to his incapacitation, he was retired from the United States Marine Corps. In 2025, Woods narrates about the other war involving the United States in an unknown place called "The Vault". On June 19, he is visited by Raul Menendez and is given a heart-shaped pendant that has the faces of two lovers on it, he is then whispered the words: "Now it begins".
Captain Alex Mason is a CIA agent and former Marine Force Recon Captain. He is the main protagonist and the primary playable character in Call of Duty: Black Ops and appears in Call of Duty: Black Ops II. It was confirmed that he is alive and returning as a playable character in Call of Duty: Black Ops II.He has a son named David. Mason is voiced by actor Sam Worthington.

Raul Menendez is a Nicaraguan political activist and will be the main antagonist of the upcoming game Call of Duty: Black Ops II. He is a former friend of Alex Mason and Frank Woods. He takes over hundreds of the U.S's own automated drones and uses them to attack its major cities, as well as cities in China such as Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong in an attempt to ignite war between the U.S and China. He has a large scar, and burn mark on his right eye. He is also seen visiting Frank Woods in The Vault to give him a medallion.
Raul is apparently extremely charismatic and influential; according to trailers, he is called "The Messiah of the 99%" and has a subscriber count on his Cordis Die YouTube channel in the millions and views in the hundreds of millions. According to Briggs, "People in America... idolize him", despite being the one responsible for the war spilled on US Soil.
At one point he is captured by David Mason and Harper, and they have to reacquire him after he escapes from them as part of one of the Campaign missions.
